Malaysian Embassy Has Not Activated Evacuation Plan
By Jamaluddin Muhammad
BANGKOK, May 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Embassy in Thailand has not activated its evacuation plan as the current situation did not warrant it, ambassador Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob said on Sunday.
"We have prepared our contingency plan for a worse-case scenario but the current situation is still under control.
"There is no anarchy and there is no outbreak of hostility at the moment," he told Bernama.
Husni said the four-day clashes between troops and anti-government protesters which left 24 people dead and 200 injured thus far, were concentrated only in certain areas here.
He said they were not widespread throughout the entire city while other provinces were unaffected, adding that the people could still go out and buy their groceries.
Husni said 300 Malaysians in the capital were registered with the embassy, located in South Sathorn Road, a few kilometers from the rally site. Of the figure, 250 resided here while the rest were tourists.
He urged Malaysians to call the embassy's operations centre at 026296800 in the event they needed assistance, and advised them to exercise caution and avoid the rally site.
