HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

Dear Members & Friends,

Today is the last working day of the year for most of us. There are many things that some of us may be reflecting as we celebrate the arrival of the new year 2011. Try to leave the ifs, buts, whys or regrets behind if you can and look forward to what the new year can brings to us. From what I can see, next year is going to be an exciting year for Malaysia as far as the sport of Football is concern.

Many thanks to the young harimaus who clinched the first ever Suzuki Cup Championship and brought much pride to Malaysia. If you were there at the Multi Purpose Hall last night, you would have witnessed the unity and thunderous support from fellow Malay sians rooting for our National team in the 2nd leg of the final match against the Indonesians. Thanks to the MATRADE, MITI and the Embassy for holding the Networking session at such an opportune time for fellow Malaysians to come together. We all deserved the specially declared public holiday announced by the Najib government to celebrate the occassion!

For those who are joining us for the Overnight Outing 15-16 January 2011, we will be contacting you shortly on the final program. Looking forward to meeting all of you for an enjoyable outing! On behalf of the Committee, I wish you and your families a great year ahead! Especially for those who are travelling, have a safe trip!

MALAYSIANS CAN BANK ON CLUB TO KEEP THEM SAFE

Malaysians can bank on club to keep them safe

2010/05/21

MALAYSIAN Bobby Tai heads the private banking division of a Thai private investment firm.

The 49-year-old corporate man has been working here for the past 23 years but is more popular among Malaysians here as well as Malaysian embassy officials as the president of Kelab Malaysia of Thailand.

Since Bangkok's crisis worsened, he has been busy putting in place several contingency plans for members.

"We constantly disseminate safety updates through our website www.kelabmalaysiaofthailand.com as well as social networking sites like Facebook."

Tai said the club, which was originally a networking group for Malaysian expatriates, would also try to help those affected by the crisis.

"We can't really do much but we try our best to inform and assist those who need help," he said, adding that several member families have returned to Malaysia because of the situation here.

The turmoil in Bangkok and the curfew announced on Wednesday has left Tai busy keeping the 300-odd club members and their families informed on safety and security issues.

"As a family man and father of a 9-year-old son, I feel that it's also my responsibility to reach out to all members, their families as well as friends to assist them in this time of need,

"The club basically functions as an unofficial extension of the Malaysian Embassy here where advisories are disseminated through all available channels as soon as possible."

Tai said Ambassador Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob and his diplomatic staff had been very proactive in taking care of the interest of all Malaysians in Thailand, especially those is Bangkok.

"We work well with the embassy and have also sat for meetings where we planned safety guidelines with representatives from the Malaysian-Thai Chamber of Commerce."

Tai also reminded Malaysians in Thailand to be mindful of safety and not to wander off as the situation was still dangerous, especially with the on-going curfew.

STEER CLEAR OF BANGKOK HOTSPOTS

Steer clear of Bangkok hotspots, Malaysians advised

By SHAUN HO
newsdesk@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have been told to avoid hotspots occupied by the Red Shirt protestors in Bangkok, although no travel advisory has been issued yet by Wisma Putra.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman reminded travellers to avoid Ratchaprasong Intersection and its surrounding areas when violence flared up again after the military began a lockdown on Red Shirt occupied areas in the Thai capital.

“The Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok remains open and unaffected by the incident.

“However, the Tourism Malaysia office is closed until further notice due to its closeness to the affected area,” Anifah said in a statement yesterday.

Bernama reported that the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok would not be evacuating Malaysians as the current situation there did not require it yet.

Malaysian ambassador to Thailand Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob said a contingency plan had been prepared but the situation was still under control.

“There is no anarchy and there is no outbreak of hostilities at the moment,” he said.

Husni said the clashes between troops and anti-government protesters, which left 24 people dead and 200 injured thus far, were concentrated in certain areas.

He said other provinces were unaffected, adding that people could still go out and buy their groceries.

EVACUATION PLAN NOT ACTIVATED

Malaysian Embassy Has Not Activated Evacuation Plan

By Jamaluddin Muhammad

BANGKOK, May 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Embassy in Thailand has not activated its evacuation plan as the current situation did not warrant it, ambassador Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob said on Sunday.

"We have prepared our contingency plan for a worse-case scenario but the current situation is still under control.

"There is no anarchy and there is no outbreak of hostility at the moment," he told Bernama.

Husni said the four-day clashes between troops and anti-government protesters which left 24 people dead and 200 injured thus far, were concentrated only in certain areas here.

He said they were not widespread throughout the entire city while other provinces were unaffected, adding that the people could still go out and buy their groceries.

Husni said 300 Malaysians in the capital were registered with the embassy, located in South Sathorn Road, a few kilometers from the rally site. Of the figure, 250 resided here while the rest were tourists.

He urged Malaysians to call the embassy's operations centre at 026296800 in the event they needed assistance, and advised them to exercise caution and avoid the rally site.
